Discover the Magic of Pushkar, India

July 2025

A spiritual immersion

At CiENViDAS, we believe volunteering is much more than helping on projects; it’s a chance to immerse yourself in new cultures, connect with people and live experiences that transform you. And few cities capture this essence as deeply as Pushkar, India’s sacred city.

For our volunteers in India, a trip to Pushkar is always one of the most anticipated and memorable moments. Set in the heart of Rajasthan, this small, vibrant city is a spiritual epicenter that captivates everyone who visits.

Pushkar’s sacred lake: a bath of faith and tradition

The heart of Pushkar is its sacred lake, surrounded by 52 ghats (steps leading down to the water) and more than 400 temples. Legend says the lake formed when a lotus flower fell from the hand of Brahma, the creator of the universe. That’s why bathing in its waters is considered a purifying act that frees you from sin.

Walking along the ghats at sunrise or sunset is a magical experience. The air fills with chanting, the ringing of temple bells and the scent of incense. Watching pilgrims perform their rituals, the offerings floating on the water and the devotion on their faces is a direct window into India’s deep spirituality. Our volunteers are often moved by this atmosphere of peace and reverence.

The Brahma Temple: a place unique in the world

Pushkar is home to one of the very few temples dedicated to the god Brahma in the entire world. Its importance to the Hindu faith is immense, and its architecture and the fervor of the devotees who visit are striking.

Beyond the sacred: a mosaic of experiences

But Pushkar is much more than its sacred sites. It’s a small yet welcoming, authentic city, full of life and color:

  • Vibrant markets: Its narrow streets are packed with bazaars where you can find everything from local crafts, jewelry, colorful textiles and spices to curiosities that will take your breath away. It’s the perfect place to find an authentic souvenir and practice your bargaining skills.
  • Flavors that win you over: As a sacred city, Pushkar is entirely vegetarian, making it a paradise for plant-based food lovers.
  • Camel rides in the desert: A trip to the sand dunes around Pushkar, often ending with a camel ride at sunset, offers a different perspective of the region and the chance to admire the stunning landscapes of the Thar Desert.
  • The famous camel fair (if you’re lucky): If your visit coincides with the Kartik Poornima festival (October/November), you’ll have the incredible chance to witness the world-famous Pushkar Camel Fair, a spectacle of color, livestock, music and traditional dance that will leave you speechless.

An experience that transforms you

For CiENViDAS volunteers, visiting Pushkar isn’t just a tourist stop. It’s an integral part of their experience in India, a moment to reflect, learn and connect with the country’s spiritual essence. It’s a chance to expand your mind, open your heart and return home with a richer, deeper perspective on the world.

If you’re thinking of embarking on a volunteering adventure with CiENViDAS, get ready for Pushkar to be one of those places that stays etched in your soul. It’s a testament to the beauty, devotion and rich cultural tapestry that makes India such a fascinating destination.
