My Experience Volunteering at an Orphanage in India (Real Testimonial)

Sandra, from Valladolid (Spain), is one of the volunteers who took part in the orphanage program of the CiENViDAS Foundation in India. Her experience left a mark not only on the project, but on her own life. Below, she shares her story about this very special journey — an honest, down-to-earth account for anyone considering a volunteer experience in India.

Why did I decide to volunteer in India?

“On a personal level, I needed to do something for others and for myself. I’d visited India three times as a tourist, and I felt it was time to go back and do my small part. It wasn’t just another trip — it was a personal need to connect, to help, and also to find myself.”

Sandra, volunteer — Orphanage Program, Jaipur

Sandra found CiENViDAS through our Instagram and decided to sign up for the volunteer program in India, choosing the orphanage as her first experience of this kind.

The first day at the project: from nerves to smiles

“So many nerves… it was the first time I’d traveled alone and the first time I’d volunteered. The uncertainty was there, but everything changed the moment I arrived at the orphanage. Seeing all the girls and feeling how warmly they welcome you makes the nerves disappear almost instantly. Their energy, their smiles, and the way they greet you change everything.”

Daily life: between planning and improvising

“I’d brought materials to run different arts-and-crafts classes. I’d recommend going with a fairly clear idea of what you want to do with them, although the truth is that many days we ended up inventing new activities on the spot. They’re incredibly creative, and it was wonderful to see how they’d come up with ideas even better than the original ones. Every day was different, full of learning and unique moments.”

What struck her most: responsibility and maturity

“Their sense of responsibility. Even the littlest ones are super responsible, which surprised me so much. They have a maturity you don’t always see in children their age, and that really makes you reflect.”

Sandra’s tips for future volunteers in India

  • Go with an open mind, especially if you don’t know India.
  • Bring a plan of activities designed to entertain them and that they’ll enjoy.
  • Consider going on your own. It can feel daunting at first, but it helps you open up much more, both with the girls and with other volunteers.

“In my case, I was coming off a really tough year personally, and this experience helped me far more than the little I feel I was able to give. It’s a journey that transforms you.”

How did Sandra sign up?

Sandra got in touch through the CiENViDAS Instagram. In her words: “They make everything really easy from the very first moment and help you through the whole process. They support you before, during, and after, which gives you a lot of peace of mind.”
