How much does volunteering abroad cost? Your budget depends on the destination, the length of your stay and what the program fee covers. To understand the full cost, add flights, insurance, any required documentation and personal spending to the published program price.
International volunteering gives you the opportunity to support local social projects, learn from another culture and work alongside people with different experiences. Planning your spending before you apply makes it easier to choose a placement that fits your circumstances.
At Fundación CiENViDAS, our volunteering programs cover India, Nepal, Thailand, Bolivia, Peru and Morocco. This guide explains the main budget items, how inclusions vary and what to ask before confirming your place.
What determines the cost of volunteering abroad?
There is no single price for an international volunteering placement. Several factors affect both the program fee and the amount you need for the trip.
- Destination: accommodation, food and transport costs vary between countries. Compare what each placement actually provides instead of assuming that one country will always be cheaper.
- Length of stay: a longer stay usually increases the total cost, although additional weeks may have a different rate. Most CiENViDAS programs require at least two weeks; some shorter experiences have their own arrangements.
- Included services: accommodation, meals, airport transfers, daily project transport and local support can make a substantial difference to your final budget.
- Optional activities: excursions, a private room, extra nights and travel before or after the placement add to the published fee.
- Preparation: flights, travel insurance, documentation and any travel health appointments need a separate allowance unless explicitly included.
The useful figure is the total amount you will spend from preparation through your return home, rather than the headline program fee alone.

What do CiENViDAS programs include?
Each of our six destinations has its own projects, activities and participation conditions. Many placements include accommodation, meals, airport pickup, transport between the accommodation and project, and support from a local coordinator.
An initial orientation helps you understand local customs, the city and your role at the project. A return airport transfer may also be included, subject to the specific program conditions.
Always read the individual listing before booking. A service included in one destination may have different limits in another, and the number of meals or covered days can vary.
Accommodation
Accommodation provides a base for your placement and a place to rest after project activities. Depending on the destination, you may stay in a volunteer house or hostel and share a room with other participants.
Check the room occupancy, location, bathroom arrangements, facilities and any private-room supplement. Where project transport is needed, confirm whether it is included and how it operates.
Meals
Meal arrangements are an important part of the comparison. The Cusco listings describe three meals a day, seven days a week. The Cochabamba listings specify breakfast and lunch five days a week, with dinner arranged by the participant.
Budget for dinners and meals on days not covered. Ask about dietary needs before applying, as the available arrangements depend on the destination and accommodation.
Local coordination and support
A local coordinator introduces you to the project and helps with practical questions during your stay. This support can make adapting to an unfamiliar place and understanding daily activities easier.
Ask who your contact will be, how to reach them and what assistance is available if an unexpected problem arises.
Transport and airport transfers
Depending on the listing, the fee may cover airport pickup, daily return transport to the project and the transfer back to the airport at the end of your placement.
Confirm the airport, arrival arrangements and covered journeys. Personal trips, sightseeing and weekend excursions may need separate transport spending.

Expenses to budget for separately
Even a placement that includes accommodation and food will leave some costs for you to cover. Separate the program payment from travel preparation and personal spending so that nothing is counted twice or overlooked.
International flights
Your airfare depends on your departure airport, destination, travel dates, connections, baggage and booking conditions. For an international reader, the relevant comparison starts at your own airport; a sample fare from Spain is not a quote for a traveler departing elsewhere.
Compare the full ticket price, including baggage, and read the change and cancellation terms. Confirm your place and arrival arrangements before purchasing flights.
Travel and medical insurance
Check that your policy covers your planned volunteering activities and the full period abroad. Review medical assistance, hospitalization, repatriation and other cover relevant to the trip, together with exclusions and excesses.
The appropriate policy depends on your circumstances. Ask your insurer to confirm any activity restrictions and obtain a current quote rather than relying on a general example.
Visas and documentation
Entry requirements depend on your nationality, destination, length of stay and planned activities. A tourist entry arrangement should not automatically be treated as permission to volunteer.
Consult the destination's official authorities and confirm the appropriate documentation for your placement. Include application fees and any necessary certificates in your budget.
Travel health preparation
Depending on your circumstances and destination, a pre-travel health consultation or preventive preparation may be appropriate. Seek advice from a qualified travel health professional and allow for any associated costs.
Personal spending and free time
You may want to buy refreshments, use personal transport, purchase souvenirs or take excursions. These expenses depend on your habits and the destination's cost of living.
Set aside an allowance for optional activities and unexpected expenses. Your total budget should include the program, flights, insurance, documentation, health preparation, uncovered meals and personal spending.
How to compare two volunteering budgets fairly
A lower program fee does not necessarily mean a lower total trip cost. Compare the same length of stay, similar accommodation and clearly identified services.
- Total program payment: check the base fee, project contribution and any additional mandatory charges.
- Accommodation: compare the location, room type, occupancy and available facilities.
- Meals: count both the number of meals and the days covered; add uncovered meals separately.
- Transport: check airport pickup, daily project journeys and the return airport transfer.
- Local support: establish what assistance is available before arrival and during the placement.
- Exclusions: identify flights, insurance, documentation, excursions and any other separate payments.
- Duration: compare actual participation weeks and any extra arrival or departure nights.
Make a simple budget table for each alternative. Also consider the organization's coordination and relationship with the local project. Our guide to choosing ethical volunteering and a trustworthy NGO explains questions that go beyond price.
A worked budget example
The following hypothetical example is for one person staying two weeks, departing from Madrid. Program fees are taken from the CiENViDAS listings checked on November 3, 2026. The flight amounts are calculation assumptions, not verified fares or offers for March 2027.
| Item | Bolivia: Cochabamba | Peru: Cusco |
|---|---|---|
| Base program fee | €250 | €490 |
| Project contribution | €200 | €200 |
| Assumed return flight from Madrid | €800 | €750 |
| Accommodation | Included | Included |
| Meals | Breakfast and lunch, 5 days/week | 3 meals/day, 7 days/week |
| Local coordination | Included | Included |
| Illustrative subtotal before other expenses | €1,250 | €1,440 |
In this example, the Peru subtotal is €190 higher even though the difference in program fees is €240. Different assumed flight costs change the comparison.
These are incomplete trip budgets. Add insurance, documentation, health preparation, optional activities, any private-room supplement and personal spending. In Bolivia, also add dinners and meals on days not covered. The food inclusions are not equivalent, so the subtotals cannot be treated as final like-for-like prices.
Replace the flight assumptions with quotes for your own departure airport and dates. Fees are listed in euros; if you budget in another currency, allow for the exchange rate and any payment charges without assuming a fixed conversion.
Check the current teaching placement in Cochabamba and public-school teaching placement in Cusco for the program prices and conditions behind the example. Confirm the applicable total before booking.

Questions to ask before applying
Clear answers about prices and participation conditions will help you prepare your trip and avoid unexpected spending.
- What is the total program payment for my chosen duration and dates?
- Which services are included, and which do I pay for separately?
- Who is my local coordinator, and what support is available?
- What accommodation will I use, and how many people share the room?
- What insurance and travel health preparation should I arrange for my circumstances?
- What documentation is required for my nationality and activities?
- Are there extra project charges or optional activities?
- What are the payment, change and cancellation conditions?
- What happens if I need assistance during my stay?
Read the individual program information and contact the CiENViDAS team if an inclusion is unclear. Request a written breakdown for the dates and project you are considering.
Frequently asked questions about volunteering costs
How much does volunteering abroad cost?
The amount depends on the destination, duration and services. For the two-week examples above, the published base fee plus project contribution is €450 in Cochabamba and €690 in Cusco. Flights, insurance and other separate expenses increase the total; confirm the applicable fees before booking.
Why do some volunteering programs cost more than others?
Differences can reflect the local cost of accommodation and food, the length of stay, transport and coordination. Compare actual inclusions and support instead of choosing by the headline price alone.
Are flights included in the fee?
The cited CiENViDAS placements list international flights separately. Check the specific program and include a quote from your own departure airport in your budget.
Are accommodation and meals included?
Many CiENViDAS programs include both, but the arrangements vary. Cusco listings describe three meals daily, seven days a week; Cochabamba listings specify breakfast and lunch five days a week. Check the room and meal conditions for your chosen placement.
Do I need to pay for transport during the placement?
Many programs include daily project transport and airport transfers under their own conditions. Personal journeys and excursions can be additional expenses, so confirm the covered routes and arrival arrangements.
What is the minimum stay?
Most programs have a two-week minimum, although shorter experiences have specific itineraries. Compare the India Experience and Nepal Experience listings if you are considering a different duration.
How much personal spending money should I bring?
That depends on the destination, uncovered meals and your plans outside the project. List daily expenses, optional activities and a contingency allowance instead of assuming that one amount suits every traveler.
How can I find a program that fits my budget?
Choose possible destinations and a realistic length of stay, then compare complete budgets using the same categories. Ask about any unclear inclusions before paying or booking travel.
